Hyundai is aiming for the Mahindra Scorpio’s spot at the top of the SUV pile. Is it good enough?
Hyundai‘s upcoming compact SUV, the Creta‘s natural rivals might include the Renault Duster, Ford EcoSport and the likes, but Hyundai has set its eyes on the top spot in the SUV space. Although, both vehicles are radically different from each other in terms of the platform used, target audience, capabilities, etc. The Mahindra Scorpio is bigger and comes with a ladder frame chassis and is pretty good off the road while the Hyundai Creta shares its platform with a hatchback and will be more at ease in the urban environment. And yet, these two SUVs could end up battling it out with each other for buyers looking for an affordable urban SUV especially since they will be positioned in a similar price bracket. Styled along the lines of Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language, the Creta looks very attractive from most angles. The plastic cladding all around coupled with a typical SUV profile work really well for the Creta. The sharp headlamps with projector units and LED daytime running lights impart the front fascia a very sharp appearance. The grille gets a generous helping of chrome, but it has been done tastefully and does not appear gaudy at all. The design gets tad bit fussy by the towards the rear of the Creta. The new Scorpio’s design has been received very well by the public as evident from its 5,000 something a month average sales figures. The grille design is interesting and the headlamps add a bit of aggressiveness to the front end. The side profile remains unchanged and at the back the LED tail lamps add some fanciness to the rear. The only turn-off, the black plastic cladding on the boot, has now been removed based on customer feedback.

The interiors of the Hyundai Creta are a pleasant place to be in with a warm black-beige combo and a good amount of space. The vertical AC vents flanking the infotainment system is a bit different from other Hyundais sold in World. The Mahindra Scorpio get much better interiors than before with an appealing colour scheme, but in terms of quality it is no match for the Hyundai Creta. The edgy design goes better with the overall image of the Mahindra Scorpio.

The Hyundai Creta gets three engine options including a 1.6 petrol highlighting its car-like characteristics. The World spec model misses out on 4 wheel drive which the Mahindra Scorpio offers. However, the Creta gets an automatic transmission option which the Scorpio doesn’t. Although an automatic version of the Scorpio will soon be launched. The engine options that are likely to sell the most, 1.6 litre diesel and 2.2 litre diesel, are identical in terms of power output and torque, but the Creta is more fuel efficient.

The prices of the Hyundai Creta fall within the INR 8.59-13.57 lakh price bracket. The Mahindra Scorpio ranges from INR 8.71 lakhs to INR 13.48 lakhs which would makes it almost the same price as the Creta.
