BMW commences production of iX5 Hydrogen
After commencing the production of a fuel cell system at BMW Competence Centre in August this year, BMW Group has now started manufacturing a limited-run iX5 Hydrogen at Munich Research and Innovation Centre (FIZ). While the limited-series hydrogen-powered iX5 has already completed an intensive testing programme, it is set to be deployed in a few countries across the globe for technology demonstration purposes starting in spring 2023.
BMW iX5 Hydrogen Assembly
BMW Group facility in Spartanburg, USA, provides base vehicles for the hydrogen model, which uses the same platform as the X5. Each iX5 model is equipped with a new floor assembly to house two hydrogen tanks and other major mechanicals and components. In fact, BMW Group has joined hands with Toyota Motor Corporation to source the individual fuel cells.
BMW iX5 Hydrogen Specifications
The iX5 leverages BMW's fifth-generation eDrive technology, similar to its electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. It features specially-made 12V and 400V electrical systems, a battery pack, a fuel cell stack, and an electric motor. The electric motor is placed at the rear axle alongside the battery pack, while the fuel cell system is located under the bonnet. The fuel system can generate 170PS, and together with BMW's eDrive system, the hydrogen powertrain makes 374PS.
BMW Research and Innovation Centre in Munich
For the first time, BMW Group is manufacturing every new vehicle under its brands at the Research and Innovation Centre. A workforce of about 900 people works in various departments, such as a body shop, assembly line, concept vehicle construction, model engineering, and additive manufacturing, among others. They work on up to six vehicle projects simultaneously, ensuring product and manufacturing processes are ready for series production. In the case of iX5, hydrogen technology and vehicle development experts are also involved in the production process.
