Tata Motors recently unveiled the refreshed Nexon EV alongside the Nexon facelift in India. This mid-life update brings significant changes to the electric SUV's design, interior, powertrain, and features. The Nexon EV now offers new variants: Creative, Fearless, and Empowered, available with two battery pack options, Mid-range and Long-range, which were previously known as Nexon EV Prime and Nexon EV Max, respectively. These aren't just name changes; both models come with slightly increased ranges compared to their predecessors, making the competition in the electric vehicle (EV) segment even fiercer. In this comparison, we pit the new Nexon EV against its direct rival, the Mahindra XUV400.

The updated Nexon EV offers two battery packs: 30kWh and 40.5kWh, boasting increased ranges of 325km and 465km, respectively. The mid-range version features a second-gen electric motor generating 129PS and 215Nm of torque, while the long-range version produces 145PS and 215Nm of torque.In contrast, the Mahindra XUV400 is equipped with 34.5kWh and 39.4kWh battery packs, providing ranges of 375km and 456km. The electric motor paired with both battery packs generates 150PS and 310Nm of torque.

Meanwhile, both the Nexon EV facelift and XUV400 support 7.2kW AC charging and 50kW DC public charging. Claimed charging times for 10% to 80% range are 56 minutes for the Nexon EV and 50 minutes for the XUV400 with the same 50kW charger.

The Nexon EV now features bi-directional charging with vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality. V2V can charge other Tata electric vehicles and other EVs, while V2L can power electronic appliances, gadgets, and tools. In terms of acceleration, Tata claims the refreshed Nexon EV can reach 0 to 100kmph in 8.9 seconds, while the XUV400 accomplishes the same feat in just 8.3 seconds, making it 0.6 seconds quicker than the Nexon EV facelift.

Tata has introduced several new features in the updated Nexon EV, including all-LED lighting, full-length light bars at the front and rear, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with OTT app and games support, a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster, a 360-degree camera, a nine-speaker JBL sound system, Hey Tata voice assistant (compatible with Alexa, Google, and Siri), telematics, front parking sensors, height-adjustable co-passenger seat, upgraded ZConnect app, paddle shifters for regenerative braking, blind-spot view monitor, 45W USB Type-C port, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Mahindra XUV400 comes with projector headlamps, fog lamps, six airbags, ESP, hill hold control, auto-dimming IRVM, TPMS, a rearview camera, a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system with over 50 connected car features, four disc brakes, an electric sunroof, cruise control, smartwatch connectivity, wireless phone charging, three drive modes, USB charging, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, four speakers, and two tweeters.

The Nexon EV facelift measures 3,994mm in length, 1,811mm in width, and 1,616mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,498mm. In contrast, the all-electric XUV400 is 4,200mm in length, 1,821mm in width, and 1,634mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,600mm.

In conclusion, while the refreshed Nexon EV offers a slightly better range, the XUV400 delivers noticeably more torque output. However, the Tata EV now comes equipped with V2V and V2L capabilities. In terms of dimensions, it is considerably smaller than the XUV400. Still, the updated Nexon EV excels in features, offering a modern design and a fresh interior, making it a compelling choice in the electric SUV segment.
