The previous generation of the Hyundai i20 was launched internationally in 2008, and at the end of the same year in World. It was a big hatchback that was loaded to the brim with features never heard of before in the segment, and the car was pretty popular because it was a value-for-money proposition. The i20 was refreshed in 2012 to make it’s design more in line with Hyundai’s ‘fluidic’ design language. Now Hyundai has launched an all-new model to take on the growing competition in the segment.

Hyundai dealerships have started accepting pre-bookings for the new Hyundai i20. Interested customers can go to the nearest dealership and book their car for a sum of Rs. 5000.

The new i20 has changed in terms of dimensions, width has increased by 24 mm to 1737 mm, wheelbase has increased by 45 mm to 2570 mm, height of the car is the same at 1505 mm, ground clearance has increased by 4 mm to 169 mm but the length of the car has decreased by 10 mm and now stands at 3985 mm. The increase in wheelbase and width means that the car is now more spacious for passengers. The decrease in length may eat into the luggage space, but the company figures suggest otherwise, we will have to see it for ourselves to confirm.
The design inside-out has received an overhaul, the car has become more masculine outside, while the interiors have become more premium. Features on the new car include

- Black and chrome finish front grille
- Black finish C-Pillar
- 15” alloy wheels
- Centre armrest between front seats with storage space below
- Front bucket type seats
- Driver seat height adjustment
- DRLs above headlamp
- Blue switch-gear back lighting
- 2-DIN media player with 4 speaker and 4 tweeters
- Electro-Chromatic interior rearview mirror with camera display & adaptive parking guidelines
- Clutch footrest
- Front impact sensor
- Smart pedals; Engine power is cut if accelerator and brake pedals are pressed at the same time in case of emergency braking.
- Front seat belts with pre-tensioner.
The new i20 will be powered by either a 1.4-litre U2, CRDi engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission, or a 1.2-litre Kappa, petrol engine coupled to a 5-speed manual transmission. Details of the automatic variant of the car have not been revealed.
The 1.4-litre diesel engine produces 89 BHP @ 4000 RPM and 220 Nm @1500-2750 RPM, powering the car to a top speed of 170 KMPH.
The 1.2-litre petrol motor produces 82 BHP @ 6000 RPM and 115 Nm @4000 RPM, which can propel the car upto 165 KMPH.

We have all seen enough spy pictures by now, its time to see something official. Before the official launch which is expected on 11th of August 2014, Hyundai World has officially opened the pre-bookings of all new The Elite i20 from Hyundai. Below are the official renderings which showcase the design philosophy of the car. The new i20 has been designed in Europe design center of Hyundai at Germany.

The 2014 New Elite i20 from Hyundai has been designed based on the Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design principle from Hyundai. Some of the major design elements include sleeker headlapms, bolder front grille with larger hexagonal design, powerful stance with large hood. C-Pillars have been darkened to make it look more sporty and larger in size, we see similar cues in some popular cars like EcoSport. The rear is also very neatly designed with sleek tail lamp combination clusters. It somewhat resembles the Brazilian cousin of i20, the HB20. The Hyundai i20 has been spied un-camouflaged, pointing to the fact that Hyundai is getting ready to launch the car in World very soon; maybe as soon as September 2014. The car gets very angular, loosing the swooping lines of the previous model. The styling seems to be a continuation of the design introduced on the Hyundai Grand i10 and the Xcent.
At the front the new i20 gets headlights which look like elongated versions of the ones on the Grand i10/Xcent, the grille is slim and the lower air-dam is prominent. The design is a bit of a departure from Hyundai’s ‘fluidic’ design, there are some elements which are similar to Ford’s ‘kinetic’ design. Move to the side and it is pretty evident that the i20 has grown, this is good news as the increase in cabin space and luggage space will be much appreciated. At the rear you see tail-lamp units which seem to be inspired by the HB20 sold in Brazil, they are slim units which give the car a unique look.

New spy shots of the upcoming Hyundai i20 show the tail-lamps more clearly. We can confirm that the design on the World-bound i20 will be a bit different than the one sold in other markets, at least if the rear is compared. The tail-lamp design is different on the test mules running in World than the one that was spotted in Europe (check the update made on March 27th below).

A new spy shot of the Hyundai i20 gives us a clearer picture what the car may look like. A spy shot showing the front of the car with less camouflage than before gives us a better idea about the design on the new car. The rendering that we showed you earlier (21st April 2014 update) is pretty much accurate, you can notice the large headlights, the trapezoidal air-intake and the s=very slim grille which connects the headlamps. You can also notice a chin-spoiler on the car, which will be new for a Hyundai when the car is launched in World. Check out the spy shot below;

Recent spy shots of the Hyundai i20 testing in World reveal that there might be slight variants in the model launched in World. The tail-lamp cluster on the test mule looks very different from the ones seen on the European test mules (check update made on 27th March). The bottom of the tail-lamp does not end as abruptly as the one on the European test mule, it tapers upward onto the boot, which will look better in our opinion. Check out the spy shot below:

The new Hyundai i20 has been spotted testing a lot of times across the world, bu these are the first spy shots where the interiors and the rear have been spotted without camouflage. Check out the images below:
As you can see in the images above, the interiors have received a comprehensive styling change: The steering wheel has been redesigned and becomes a 3-spoke unit rather than the 4-spoke unit on the current model. The centre console seems to have been pushed upward, the small screen above it in the current model has been done away with. The Dashboard is now distinctively split into two parts, a lower part and an upper part. The A/C vents are not as long vertically as the ones in the current model. The A/C controls look much better, there seem to buttons to control seat ventilation for the front seats too. The desogn of the door pads is much more cohesive than the ones found on the current model.
Move to the rear and you see a big redesign, the ‘boomerang’ tail-lamps may seem awkward now but we think it would look nice once the whole car is revealed (in other spy shots, we hope). It looks like the car will have a deep luggage area, the boot-lid has been really pushed out.

The 2014 , Hyundai will unveil the new i20 by the end of 2014 and has been extensively testing the car on World roads since 2013. Check out the spy shots below:
From this angle it is clear that the new Hyundai i20 will get a prominent grille which will reflect Hyundai’s new fluidic design, something that is not so apprent in the current model. The new Hyundai i20 will also get swept back headlamps, new ORVMs etc.
The most clear shot of the rear of the new Hyundai i20 yet, this angle shows that the tail-lamps unit might not be as swept back as the one on the current model, it may also feature LED elements.
Hyundai wants to get a bigger share in the mass-market car segment, the new Hyundai i20, along with the upcoming Hyundai Excent and the upcoming Hyundai compact SUV will surely hot-up their respective segments, expect a lot more news from Hyundai in the near future. Hyundai has started testing the next generation i20 near its plant at Chennai. This is quite exciting as it means that Hyundai will be launching the new i20 in World by the end of 2013 or early 2014. By the looks of it, the Hyundai i20 will get better in sync with Hyundai’s ‘fluidic’ design language, it may get a bit bigger but will be within the 4-metre limit. The most prominent design change that can be seen is in the rear door glass area.

The photo below shows the rear of the new i20. Hyundai has heavily camouflaged the car to confuse on-lookers, there have been some suggestions that this could be a compact sedan, and that is a sign that the camouflage is working. As far as we know, Hyundai is not planning a compact sedan version of the i20, because the car is too close to the 4-metre long marker, 3995 mm to be precise. Fitting a boot onto this big hatchback will be too difficult a task.

Hyundai is now a aggressive player in the market, and refreshes its products every five-to-six years. By that logic, the i20 is set to get a total refresh anytime soon, and there is proof that the process is already underway. Spy shots have come all the way from Hyundai’s home country, South Korea, of camouflaged cars which may be test mules of the next gen i20.
As you can see from the two images above, the rear window of the new Hyundai i20 is now redesigned and makes the car look a bit longer. The outside rear-view mirrors look different too. Ground clearance looks lesser than the current i20, but that could be revised by the time the car is launched in World. Though the engineers have camouflaged the car to make it look boxy, you can be rest assured that the next i20 will get the sweeping ‘fluidic’ design that all Hyundai cars get.
We do not have any info on the engines, transmissions and features that the new i20 will get, but we know that unless the rules change the new i20 will be powered by a 1.2 litre (or smaller) petrol engine and a 1.5 litre (or smaller) diesel engine. Currently the i20 is powered by a 1.2-litre, 84 BHP, 116 Nm petrol engine which is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, a 1.4-litre, 90 BHP, 224 Nm, diesel engine which is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and a 1.4-litre, 100 BHP, 139 Nm, petrol engine which is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. These engine and transmission combinations could be carried over to the new i20 too.
It is expected that Hyundai will launch the car internationally, sometime in 2014.
