We reported that a new Bajaj scooter is coming up under the Urbanite brand. It was expected to be an electric scooter but will be a petrol-powered one.
Bajaj Auto confirmed that they will launch the Urbanite brand soon in World. Urbanite will be a sub-brand which will house the brand’s upcoming scooters. The first scooter from this brand is expected to debut by September 2019.
While the brand has confirmed that they are working towards electric scooters, their first one will not be an E-scooter. Latest sketches leaked by Bikewale show a retro-styled scooter, which seems to be powered by an internal combustion engine.
A couple of years back, Bajaj did a stint in the scooter segment, but failed terribly. Urbanite is a brand for urban mobility, for which scooters are the best things. Possibly, Bajaj might start with fuel powered scooter as it is in the stage of developing the infrastructure and other arrangements.
Based on the sketches, it looks like the new Bajaj scooter will follow a retro theme. It looks similar to the Vespa series, which is an another retro-styled scooter. It also draws similarities from the Peugeot Django scooter, because of the wide body panels.
At the front, it gets multi-spoke alloys, an eagle-shaped front design with the big headlamps. For suspension purposes, it seems to use telescopic forks with rubber gaiters and anti-dive function. A similar setup is seen on the premium Vespa scooters.
The new Bajaj scooter gets a round digital cluster, which looks funky as well as premium. On the apron, a lockable box is also seen. At the rear, it seems to be inspired by the Vespa as well as the brand’s Chetak scooter.
Interestingly, last year, we got some leaked photos of Bajaj’s upcoming scooter. The new Bajaj scooter might be named Chetak, reviving the old memories. Coincidentally, the sketches match the image of the scooter.
The scooter in the leaked photo get the exact same bodywork, design, suspension setup and the alloy wheels. Could it be that Bajaj Chetak is going to be revived in World, in a modern avatar?
Back then, we reported that Chetak might debut in a fuel-powered as well as electric-motor powered state. The Urbanite brand might first launch the fuel powered Chetak, followed by an all-electric version of it.
Bajaj has confirmed that it will launch the Urbanite brand in 6-9 months, mostly by September 2019. Looks like there will be a new entrant in the premium scooter segment, rivalling against Vespa.
