Tata Harrier, which is a recently launched five-seater SUV, is placed in a similar price bracket as the automaker’s seven-seater crossover MPV Hexa.
The Tata Harrier SUV made its debut in World last month. This premium compact SUV, based on Tata’s OMEGA architecture falls in-between the price range of INR 12.69 lakh to 16.25 lakh (ex-showroom). As a result of this, it competes with the likes of Mahindra XUV 500 and the Jeep Compass. In addition to competing with these, the Harrier also, in a way, pitches against one of Tata Motors own offering, the Hexa MPV crossover.
Despite the Hexa being a seven-seater MPV and the Harrier being a five-seater SUV, both of these, in one way of the other, are each other’s rivals. One thing which has become quite certain after taking a look at Tata Motors sales for the month of January 2019.
For the aforementioned month, the newly launched Tata Harrier sold a total of 422 units in our country. In comparison, the Hexa only managed to sell around 309 units. To put things in perspective, for the same month last year, the Hexa managed to sell 873 units. In fact, it was averaging around 600-700 monthly sales ahead of the launch of the Harrier.
For instance, in December 2018, Tata sold a total of 682 units of the Hexa in World. With this, we see that the Hexa has observed a YOY decline in sales of about 65%, while the MOM decline stands at 55%. Since the Harrier was launched on the 23rd of January, it is ideal to wait for a couple more months for it to being on sale to get a clear idea of its performance in our market.
To recap, the Tata Harrier is currently offered with a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine which is sourced from Fiat. This engine has been detuned to produced 140 BHP of power along with 350 Nm of peak torque. Transmission option include a 6-speed manual gear. The Harrier does not offer a 4WD or an automatic gearbox as of now.
Tata Motors has confirmed that they are soon going to launch a seven-seater version of the Harrier in World. It will be priced up and above of what the five-seater version. And it is also going to come with an automatic gearbox.
